Withanolide percentage, the part of the plant used, and the quiet differences that separate a premium ashwagandha extract from a commodity one.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has gone from an Ayurvedic staple to one of the most asked-for botanicals on the planet. Demand has pulled in a lot of suppliers, and quality now varies widely. The Certificate of Analysis is where you tell the difference — if you know what to read.

Withanolides — the number that matters

Ashwagandha extracts are standardised to withanolides, the active marker group. You will see figures from 1.5% up to 5%, 8% or even 10%, usually by HPLC or gravimetric method. Higher is not automatically "better" — it is about matching the figure your formula and claim need. What you must avoid is a withanolide number with no method stated, or a gravimetric figure quietly compared against someone else's HPLC one.

Root, leaf, or both?

This is the question many buyers miss. Traditional Ayurvedic use, and most premium positioning, is built on root extract. Leaf material can lift the withanolide number cheaply but is a different story for traditional-use claims and for some markets. Ask plainly whether the extract is root, leaf, or a blend — it should be on the spec, and it affects both price and how you can market the finished product.

  • Withanolide % and the method (HPLC / gravimetric)
  • Plant part — root, leaf, or blend
  • Heavy metals to USP <232>/<233>; pesticide and microbial screening
  • Extraction process and any carrier / excipient
  • A per-batch CoA, not a generic data sheet

Traditional use, stated honestly

Ashwagandha has a long record of traditional use and a growing body of research, and it is fine to describe that. What is not fine is dressing reference data up as a medical guarantee. We describe the marker, the method and the part of the plant, and leave the finished-product claims — which sit under your local regulation — to you. Honest paperwork protects both sides.

Tip: When comparing two ashwagandha offers, normalise them first: same withanolide %, same method, same plant part. Half the price gaps in this category disappear the moment you compare like with like.

Frequently asked questions

What withanolide percentage can you supply?

We can offer standardised extracts across roughly 1.5% to 10% withanolides, the figure being indicative and confirmed by HPLC on each batch CoA. Higher percentages are typically extract grades rather than milled root.

Is the withanolide content measured by HPLC or gravimetric?

HPLC gives a true marker percentage for withanolides; gravimetric (often quoted on cheaper material) measures a broad fraction and reads higher without proving marker content. We default to HPLC and state the method on the CoA.

Is your ashwagandha from root, leaf or a blend?

We declare the plant part used — root, leaf, or a root-and-leaf blend — on the specification and CoA, since many markets and buyers prefer root-only. Tell us your target market and we will match the plant part accordingly.

Can you state what ashwagandha is traditionally used for?

We can reference its traditional use in Ayurveda honestly in documentation, but we do not make medical or therapeutic claims. Finished-product claims and their regulatory compliance are the buyer's responsibility in their market.
